The Metropolitan Police stated that the individual was riding as a passenger in a Nissan Altima when the vehicle collided with a Volvo truck-tractor. The passenger, who was subsequently identified as Pritam "Peter" Singh, passed away at the location of the incident.

Investigators believe the semi was traveling westbound in the right lane when it moved to the left lane as it approached a broken-down vehicle pulled over on the right shoulder. As the semi merged back into the right lane, the Altima passed the semi on the right at a high rate of speed, according to a press release. The Altima struck the trailer tires, which caused it to leave the roadway and roll over into the tree line.

The 30-year-old operator of the Altima and a 19-year-old occupant sitting at the back were transported to TriStar Skyline Medical Center with injuries not deemed life-threatening.

Neither driver showed any indications of impairment at the scene.

Drivers were rerouted starting from Exit 40 in the Whites Creek area until the road was reopened shortly before 6 a.m.

No further details were promptly disclosed.
