LAKewood, Ohio (WOIo) -- At their upcoming council meeting in two weeks, the Lakewood City Council plans to consider implementing a Complete Streets ordinance.

On Monday evening, the council discussed the possibility of proposing the legislation.

The objective is to enhance security for walkers, motorists, cyclists, and public transportation users.

The crossing at Hilliard and Madison has lately turned into a significant worry for both motorists and people walking due to safety issues.

In March, as reported by Lakewood Fire, a dad was cycling with his two small kids when this incident occurred. was hit by a vehicle on Madison Avenue.

As mentioned by a relative, the toddler has been admitted to the hospital and might require an operation.

In December 2024, former 19 News reporter Bill Safos was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing the road at the same crossroads.

The Lakewood City Council will unveil new safety initiatives for the hazardous junction.

Lakewood's City Council President, Sarah Kepple, believes that the Complete Streets ordinance might offer a potential resolution.

This follows up on our efforts from last year related to the Active Transportation Plan and Safe Streets for All," Kepple explained. "The focus here is ensuring that whenever we undertake major initiatives, we consider Comprehensive Street approaches. We ask ourselves questions like whether to install curb extensions, elevated crossings, flexible barriers, or other similar options.

She mentioned that an additional element would be a citizens' advisory council.

"I'm genuinely thrilled about this because it will merge the knowledge of our team at City Hall with community members who possess firsthand experience of these issues," Kepple stated.
