HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government has announced that 22 affordable housing units for youth and young families will be opening next week as part of an initiative involving two local nonprofits.
The Phoenix Youth Programs along with the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia have together acquired two apartment complexes in Halifax. This purchase was made possible through assistance including a $3.68 million loan and an annual operating cost contribution of $541,000 from the provincial government.
Colton LeBlanc, the minister responsible for growth and development, mentions that the two structures, comprising a total of 12 units, will offer comprehensive support services for tenants, with occupancy beginning next week.
Each apartment includes two bedrooms and a living room, designed for individuals between 16 to 24 years old or young families.
Each resident will contribute 30 percent of their gross income towards the unit, with a cap at $500 monthly per individual. This fee will cover electricity, water, and internet services.
The provincial government states that the Phoenix Youth Programs team members, who focus on outreach services, will be present 24/7 to offer assistance.
The report from The Canadian Press was initially released on April 7, 2025.
