HALIFAX – According to the Nova Scotia government, 22 units aimed at providing affordable housing for youth and young families will be available next week through a collaboration between two local nonprofits.
The Phoenix Youth Programs along with the Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia have together acquired two apartment complexes in Halifax. This purchase was made possible through a $3.68 million loan and an annual operational cost contribution of $541,000 from the provincial government.
Colton LeBlanc, the minister responsible for growth and development, mentions that the two structures, which collectively have 12 units, will provide comprehensive assistance to occupants. Occupancy is set to begin next week.
Each apartment consists of two bedrooms and a living room, designed for individuals between 16 and 24 years old or young families.
Each resident will contribute 30 percent of their gross income towards the unit, with a cap at $500 monthly per individual. This fee will cover electricity, water, and internet services.
The province states that the Phoenix Youth Programs personnel, who focus on outreach services, will be present 24/7 to offer assistance.
