We understand that the passion for station wagons may seem unhealthy, but we're indifferent to that. Particularly when a manufacturer such as Mercedes-Benz offers us yet another opportunity to experience not just any wagon, but a brand-new high-performance one. Watch out, Audi RS6 Avant and BMW M5 Touring There's a fresh model in town, and it’s an AMG.
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 The wagon may lack a V8 engine, but it boasts an impressive 600 horsepower instead. It’s set to arrive in the U.S. for real this time. Plus, you’ll get a 3.0-liter inline-six engine rather than the alternative option. the four-pot that AMG tweaks to astronomical levels But somehow, it just won't take off.
Benz Enters the Segment of German Hyperluxury Vehicles with a More Fuel-Efficient Option

The Audi RS6 Avant has been the dominant hyperwagon in this segment for the longest time since its introduction. Under its hood lies a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine delivering an impressive output of 621 horsepower. Coming in as a close second is the BMW M5 Touring, which boasts a larger displacement with its 4.4-liter powerplant and generates even more power at 717 horses thanks to its plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) setup.
Mercedes-AMG now offers a powerful 3.0-liter bi-turbo inline-six engine poised to compete at the top level. This refined powerplant generates 443 hp independently, along with an impressive 413 lb-ft of torque. Coupled behind this gasoline engine is a nine-speed automatic transmission equipped with a 161-hp electric motor.
Thanks to a 28.6 kWh battery located beneath the trunk floor, the E53 Hybrid boasts an output of 577 horsepower; however, opting for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package boosts this figure to 604 horsepower during Race Start mode. Regardless, both configurations offer 553 lb-ft of torque and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds or quicker. With the addition of the Dynamic Plus package, the top speed reaches 174 miles per hour—more than sufficient to startle as many as three children simultaneously.
The updated E53 is just as potent and fast as the previous model. old V8 63 model The distinction lies in its reduced fuel consumption, and it has the capability to commute to and from work without relying on gasoline whatsoever, if desired. Mercedes hasn’t disclosed the precise range yet, but they anticipate it will be between 40 to 50 miles. For those who prefer speed, the vehicle utilizes just the initial 21 kWh of the battery for electric driving mode, saving the remainder for instances where maximum power output is needed.

AMG Suspension, Limited Slip Differential, and Rear-Wheel Steering

The modifications made by AMG could jostle the children’s drink containers, yet thanks to adaptive dampers, it likely won’t be excessively firm. Opting for the Dynamic Plus package introduces features like active engine mounts, an AMG electronically controlled rear differential, along with AMG brakes featuring bright red calipers. Additionally, incorporating rear-wheel steering aims to enhance the agility of the station wagon during tight parking situations and improve stability at high speeds.
Mercedes-AMG hasn’t provided specifics, but anticipate it to be an upgraded version of the E53 sedan with additional rear legroom. This model will feature a premium Burmester sound system and child-appropriate MB-Tex upholstery or Nappa leather seating options. Additionally, it will provide up to 64.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, matching the current standard set by others. GLE-Class SUV.
Of course, the AMG super-wagon has one drawback: its weight. Mercedes-Benz did not disclose the U.S. specifications, but according to European models, it will weigh approximately 5,300 pounds. While this is about 230 pounds lighter than BMW’s M5 Touring which tips the scales at 5,530 pounds, it still significantly exceeds Audi’s RS6 Avant, weighing in just under 4,982 pounds.
On the contrary, it weighs 80 pounds less than a GLE 53. Additionally, the latter does not feature the PHEV system, making it less potent and significantly slower. Thus, the wagon takes the lead once again.
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid station wagon is set to arrive at U.S. dealerships this autumn. However, don’t look forward to price details anytime soon, since Benz (along with all others) is still working through the adjustments of these new expense structures.
