Sections of one of South Carolina's most heavily traveled highways will shortly have only one lane available as construction work is scheduled for portions of Interstate 26, authorities say. South Carolina DOT .

The westbound lanes of I-26 will remain closed for over a month at several points. in Newberry County , SCDOT announced on Monday in a press statement.

The closings will occur to allow for bridge repairs over the Palmetto Trail at mile marker 83, as well as over Indian Creek at mile marker 65, as stated in the announcement.

The repair work is set to start on April 28, with the anticipated closure of lanes continuing until the month’s end in May, according to SCDOT.

"SCDOT stated in the announcement that drivers should anticipate delays and consider taking detours when feasible," they advised.

On Monday, SCDOT revealed that nearby Saluda County would also experience disruptions due to bridge work. According to SCDOT, they plan to shut down and reroute traffic from the S.C. 121 bridge over Big Creek in Saluda County starting April 14th. The agency stated that these repair works should wrap up by the end of the month.
