NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Multiple vehicles were involved in a fatal accident that led to part of the interstate being shut down in northern Davidson County during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation announced the accident on I-24 West at mile marker 37, occurring approximately at 2 a.m.

The Metro Nashville Police Department reported that a Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling west in the right lane on I-24 when the driver pulled into the left lane because a vehicle was broken down on the right shoulder.

According to the report, when the semi returned to the right lane, a Nissan Altima tried to overtake the semi at an excessive speed and ended up hitting one of the trailer's wheels during this maneuver. This impact led to the Altima losing control and flipping over into the trees, as detailed by MNPD’s probe.

The accident claimed the life of Pritam "Peter" Singh, 42, who was seated in the front passenger position, and resulted in injuries for the driver as well as another occupant in the backseat. Both individuals were taken to TriStar Skyline Medical Center; however, they are anticipated to make a recovery.

The MNPD reported that there were no indications of impairment related to either vehicle discovered at the location.

Multiple westbound lanes of Interstate 24 were shut down for several hours, with traffic redirected from Old Hickory Boulevard exit onto Whites Creek Pike upon reopening around 6 a.m.
